Perforated Plates: A Selection Guide for Industrial Filtration and Separation

Perforated plates are durable metal sheets punched with precise holes or slots, used across filtration and
separation systems to let fluids or gases pass while blocking solids. They can act as standalone filters or as structural support for finer filter media.

Tegman offers an extensive range of standard perforated plates ex-stock, with custom orders manufactured to specification through Tegman’s in-house engineering workshop.

Aperture Types Available

Aperture type affects both open area and structural strength. Tegman’s standard range includes:

Round – even, uniform flow and good all-round strength retention
Square – higher open area than round holes of the same size
Slotted, round end or square end – suited to elongated or fibrous particles
Hexagonal – strong open-area-to-strength ratio
Oval – similar benefit to slotted, with more open area than a round hole of comparable width
Diamond – balances open area with plate rigidity

All apertures are available in staggered or straight pitch – staggered increases open area, straight keeps holes aligned in rows and columns.

Where Perforated Plates Are Used

• Water treatment – intake screens, sand filters, sludge screens
• Food & beverage – juice filters, brewing strainers, dairy processing
• Chemical – distillation trays, gas scrubbers
• Oil & gas – sand control screens in wells, mud filtration
• Mining & aggregates – rock sieving, ore sorting, slurry separation

Key Selection Considerations

• Tooling available for manufacturing the specific perforation
• Aperture type
• Hole sizing and pitch – together these determine open area
• Material type and thickness
• Plate size – standard sheets are 1225 x 2450mm for mild steel and 1250 x 2500mm for stainless steel
• Aperture to plate thickness ratio – affects flow resistance and blinding risk
• Plate material MPa (ultimate tensile strength) – relevant for load-bearing use

These factors trade off against each other, so the right balance depends on whether the plate’s main job is filtration, structural support, or both

Materials and Stock Range

Mild steel (including electro-galvanised) suits dry, non-corrosive applications. Stainless steel 304 and 316 suit wet, corrosive, or hygiene-sensitive environments, with 316 offering higher corrosion resistance.

Tegman’s exstock range includes:

• Mild steel and electro-galvanised, round and slotted apertures
• Stainless steel 304 and 316, round and square apertures
• A broad range of thicknesses, pitches and aperture sizes
